Richmond Village - Southern Tasmania
Richmond Village is a fantastic location just outside of Hobart City and is definitely a spot worth visiting. In fact, Richmond Village is actually the most visited location in Tasmania, perhaps because it is only 20mins outside of Hobart City, the capital of Tasmania. With a wonderful collection of arts and crafts stores, gourmet food options and old Georgian colonial ear style building and stories to tell, it is worth a detour or visit.
We love to help promote this area, and we have put together a listing of some of the Richmond Village activities, accommodation and Airbnb’s, food and wine cellar doors and more to see while you are visiting Richmond Village.
Richmond Village - Southern Tasmania
Richmond is a picture-perfect town in the heart of the Coal River Valley wine region that tells the story of an early Australian colonial village.
This is the perfect place to learn about Tasmania's past and can be as easy as a stroll down the pretty nineteenth century streets. Richmond has more than 50 Georgian buildings, many beautifully restored and now operating as cafes, restaurants, galleries and accommodation.
The town's most photographed landmark is the Richmond Bridge. Built by convicts in the 1820s, it's the oldest bridge in Australia and offers a perfect picnic spot on the grassy banks of the Coal River.
The Richmond Gaol is also the oldest gaol in Australia. Standing inside the stone cells gives an eerie insight into the hardships and brutality of convict life in early Van Diemen's Land.
Not so confronting is the Hobart Town Historical Model Village where you can learn about the life of settlers in Hobart in the 1820s.
There's also plenty of good food and wine to enjoy, from traditional bakeries and pubs in town to nearby vineyards with cellar doors and restaurants serving up the best Tasmanian produce.
If travelling to the East Coast or Tasman Peninsula from Hobart, consider visiting Richmond on the way.
Richmond is a 30-min drive (24 km) east of Hobart
Richmond Village: Booking Public Day Tours

Several of the local Tasmanian tour operators also run shuttle style services to and from Richmond, while also linking these into other larger day tours. These are often cheap and efficient options to get you to and from Richmond Village.
Richmond Village - The Bridge
Richmond in southern Tasmania is home to many buildings and structures built by convicts under the most appalling conditions. One such structure, the Coal River Bridge was completed in 1825, making it the oldest surviving freestone bridge in Australia.
For some years Richmond had been used as a crossing point for people travelling by land to the Tasman and Forestier Peninsulas. The bridge was built by convict labour between 1823 and 1825 for movement of military, police and convicts between Hobart and Port Arthur. The bridge was originally named Bigge's Bridge after Royal Commissioner, John Thomas Bigge, who recognised the need for a bridge across the Coal River in 1820.
There also several ducks that live underneath and around the bridge. Please observe these creatures and don’t try to feed them, it is a painful process and is actually dangerous for the ducks to continuously eat bread or similar items that people throw into the water

Richmond Village History: Tasmanian Travel & Expriences
Towards the end of 1803, a party from Lieutenant Bowen's settlement at Risdon Cove explored eastwards, hunting kangaroo and emu. They discovered coal and named the Coal River. Land grants to settlers encouraged settlement in the area. In 1823, the erection of the Richmond Bridge facilitated travel to the east coast and the Tasman Peninsula, as settlers pushed further in search of land. In 1824, the township of Richmond was named, following a complex land deal in which ninety acres of David Lord's Richmond Park estate were exchanged for 1400 acres adjacent to his property.
In the 1820's, Richmond became one of Lieutenant-Governor Arthur's police districts. The gaol, court house, barracks and a watch house were erected. Richmond continued to grow, largely because of its importance as a convict station and a military post.
In the 1830's, Richmond's position on the routes east and south made it a natural overnight stopping place. By the 1830's, several roads led in and out of the town. Inns increased in number. Businesses were established. There were eventually blacksmiths, wheelwrights, saddlers, stockyards, tanneries, a market place, a pound, brick and lime kilns, as well as general stores and other services.
In the 1850's, two daily coaches linked Richmond with the Restdown ferry at Risdon or Kangaroo Point at Bellerive. For most of the nineteenth century, the Coal River was accessible through Pitt Water, and there was considerable trade with Hobart. In 1872, the opening of the Sorell causeway (which caused the river to silt) and the extension of the Hobart-Launceston railway line through Campania had a dramatic effect on Richmond's growth. For the next one hundred years, Richmond was a stable, quiet rural community.
In the 1970s, awareness of the significance of Richmond's heritage began to develop. At the same time, Richmond grew as an arts and crafts centre, with a number of galleries opening. Richmond became recognised as an important Tasmanian tourist destination. More recently, the Coal River Valley has seen a diversification of agriculture, which has included the establishment of a number of successful vineyards.
